What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a procedure to save a tooth that has become severely infected or decayed. Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp — containing nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria reach this pulp through deep decay or a crack, it becomes infected and causes intense pain.

Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals inside the root, and seals the tooth — eliminating the infection and saving the natural tooth from extraction.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Many patients come to us only when the pain becomes unbearable. But earlier treatment means a simpler procedure. Watch for these warning signs.

  • Severe, persistent toothache that worsens when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the temperature source is removed
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
  • Swelling, tenderness, or a pimple-like bump on the gums near the tooth
  • A cracked or chipped tooth that begins to ache

The Root Canal Procedure — Step by Step

Modern root canal treatment at Elysian Dental Lounge is precise, gentle, and typically completed in 1–2 visits.

  • X-ray & Diagnosis — We confirm the extent of infection and map the root canal anatomy
  • Local Anaesthesia — The area is numbed — you should feel pressure but little or no pain
  • Pulp Removal — The infected pulp tissue is carefully removed through a small opening
  • Cleaning & Shaping — Each canal is cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to receive the filling
  • Sealing — The canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha
  • Crown Placement — A crown is placed over the treated tooth to protect it long-term

Modern RCT is nothing like its reputation. With today's techniques and anaesthesia, most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. Many say it feels no worse than getting a filling.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should feel little or no pain during treatment. You may experience mild soreness for 2–3 days afterwards, which is easily managed with pain relief medication.

Most root canal treatments are completed in 1–2 visits, depending on the degree of infection and the number of canals in the tooth.

In most cases, yes. The treated tooth becomes more brittle over time and a crown protects it from fracture, significantly extending the life of the tooth.

Without treatment, the infection spreads — to the jawbone, neighbouring teeth, and potentially the bloodstream in severe cases. The tooth will eventually require extraction. Root canal treatment is usually preferable to extraction.
